Young farmers face great ag opportunity

It's typical for the younger generation of farmers to feel a degree of anxiety about preparing for their own future farm leadership, and some might say that today's young generation faces a completely new set of challenges due to the current ag environment. Water Street's Director of Training and Development, Dean Heffta, says that's looking at it the wrong way.

Yes, he agrees it's a tough financial environment these days for ag. However, the young farm leaders who come up in this environment will learn lessons that can't be taught—they must simply be experienced, much like the young farmers of the 1980's experienced. Often the toughest times breed the best leaders. Watching others make decisions in tight-margin situations—and making some of their own—brings invaluable experience that will last today's young farmer throughout their careers.

Listen to Dean and KRVN's Dewey Nelson talk it over below.
